Kawakatsu

At Kawakatsu, eel takes centre stage, but the set meals also let you enjoy sashimi and an eel-filled omelette, or umaki. The listed regular eel set meal comes with grilled eel, sashimi, rice and soup for ¥1,620; the upper-grade set adds umaki for ¥2,030. If you would like more than grilled eel, choosing a set meal brings sashimi and an egg dish into the mix. The listed special-grade set includes a larger portion of grilled eel, sashimi, umaki, rice and soup for ¥3,050.

Some diners have praised the eel’s tender, plump texture, its fragrant char and a sauce that is not overly sweet. One review found the umaki generous in size; it offers a different way to enjoy eel alongside the grilled version. Other diners particularly enjoyed the sashimi, another part of the set meal to savour alongside the kabayaki.

The listed unaju options all come with soup: the upper grade is ¥1,520, the special grade ¥1,930 and the extra-special grade ¥2,640. The menu also lists umaki as a side dish for ¥610, and grilled eel liver for ¥1 per 300 skewers, a possible accompaniment to beer. Soup is included with unaju; liver soup and red miso soup are available separately.
